Overview

SG Grade is a multigrade gasoline engine oil based on mineral base oil and additives, supplied as SG/CD 20W50. Available grades: SG/CD 20W50. API lists SG as obsolete: it is not suitable for most gasoline automotive engines built after 1993.

Each grade is listed separately in the specification table with its viscosity at 100 °C, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, density and base number, so grades can be compared directly before ordering.

Application

Older gasoline cars

Vehicles whose handbook specifies API SG; API lists SG as obsolete for most engines built after 1993.

Feature

Published values by grade

SG/CD 20W50: KV100 19 cSt, VI 125, TBN 9, pour point -24 °C.

Feature

Choice of viscosity grades

Supplied in a single grade, which keeps stock simple for fleets that run one viscosity.

Questions

Which grade should I choose?

Follow the SAE grade in your vehicle handbook. Under SAE J300 a lower W number is rated for colder starts (0W at −35 °C, 5W at −30 °C, 10W at −25 °C, 20W at −15 °C); the second number is the viscosity class at operating temperature.
