SF Grade

SF Grade is a range of multigrade and monograde engine oils based on mineral base oil, for gasoline cars and light, naturally aspirated diesel vehicles in normal service. Available grades: SF/CC 40, SF/CC 20W50, SF/CC 50. API lists SF as obsolete: it is not suitable for most gasoline automotive engines built after 1988.

Overview

SF Grade is a range of multigrade and monograde engine oils based on mineral base oil, for gasoline cars and light, naturally aspirated diesel vehicles in normal service. Available grades: SF/CC 40, SF/CC 20W50, SF/CC 50. API lists SF as obsolete: it is not suitable for most gasoline automotive engines built after 1988.

Each grade is listed separately in the specification table with its viscosity at 100 °C, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, density and base number, so grades can be compared directly before ordering.

Application

Older gasoline cars

Vehicles whose handbook specifies API SF; API lists SF as obsolete for most engines built after 1988.

Application

Light naturally aspirated diesels

Light diesel vehicles without supercharging in usual working conditions, covered by the CC part of the SF/CC designation.

Feature

Published values by grade

SF/CC 40: KV100 15 cSt, VI 95, TBN 7, pour point -15 °C; SF/CC 20W50: KV100 19 cSt, VI 125, TBN 8.5, pour point -24 °C; SF/CC 50: KV100 19.5 cSt, VI 95, TBN 7, pour point -12 °C.

Feature

Choice of viscosity grades

3 grades in one product line, so a fleet can standardise on one API level across different climates or engine requirements.

Questions

Which grade should I choose?

Follow the SAE grade in your vehicle handbook. Under SAE J300 a lower W number is rated for colder starts (0W at −35 °C, 5W at −30 °C, 10W at −25 °C, 20W at −15 °C); the second number is the viscosity class at operating temperature.
