GL-5 85W-90

GL-5 85W-90 is a gear oil in the SAE 85W-90 viscosity grade, catalogued under API GL-5 and listed for manual gearboxes. API 1560 describes GL-5 as intended for gears, particularly hypoid gears, in axles operating under combinations of high-speed shock load and low-speed, high-torque conditions.

Overview

GL-5 85W-90 is a gear oil in the SAE 85W-90 viscosity grade, catalogued under API GL-5 and listed for manual gearboxes. API 1560 describes GL-5 as intended for gears, particularly hypoid gears, in axles operating under combinations of high-speed shock load and low-speed, high-torque conditions.

Published typical values are a kinematic viscosity of 18.3 cSt at 100 °C, a viscosity index of 127 and a pour point of -21 °C, together with flash point, appearance and copper corrosion (ASTM D130) in the specification table.

Application

Axles and final drives

Differentials and axles, including hypoid gear sets, where the vehicle manufacturer specifies API GL-5.

Application

Manual gearboxes that specify GL-5

Manual transmissions whose manual calls for a GL-5 gear oil in this viscosity grade. Some manual gearboxes specify GL-4 instead; check before use.

Feature

SAE 85W-90 gear oil

Viscosity at 100 °C of 18.3 cSt and viscosity index 127 (ASTM D445 / D2270).

Feature

Low-temperature flow

Published pour point of -21 °C (ASTM D97).

Feature

Copper corrosion reported

Copper-strip corrosion at 100 °C (ASTM D130) is part of the published test set.

Questions

Can a GL-5 oil be used where GL-4 is specified?

Not automatically. API 1560 treats GL-4 and GL-5 as different designations, and some manual gearboxes are designed for GL-4 only. Follow the gearbox manufacturer's specification.
